Devon Bryan: Reflections on Leadership, Community, and Cybersecurity in South Florida

The South Florida Information Systems Security Association (SFISSA) is thrilled to share insights from Devon Bryan, former Global Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) of Carnival Corporation. During his three impactful years in South Florida, Devon made significant contributions to the cybersecurity community, fostering collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity. His dedication has left a lasting legacy, inspiring professionals both locally and beyond.

Below, Devon shares his reflections on this transformative chapter of his career, highlighting the meaningful connections, lessons, and initiatives that defined his time in South Florida.

Reflections on Three Transformative Years in South Florida

As I close this chapter of my career, I find myself reflecting on the incredible three years I’ve spent in South Florida as the Global Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) of Carnival Corporation. It’s been a journey defined by growth, connection, and impact, not just professionally, but personally. The vibrant South Florida cybersecurity community welcomed me with open arms and provided a platform to contribute, collaborate, and grow alongside some of the most talented professionals in the industry.

Building a Stronger Cybersecurity Community

From day one, I was struck by the sense of camaraderie among my fellow CISOs in South Florida. This is a region that truly understands the value of community in tackling the ever-evolving challenges of cybersecurity. Together, we worked to share insights, exchange best practices, and build a network of trust that extended across industries.

One of the most rewarding experiences during my time here was collaborating with my peers Johann Beleaguer, John Masserini, Alexis Perdereaux-Weeks, Jonathan Griffith, and Natalie Johnson to help launch the South Florida chapter of Cyversity. As an organization committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the cybersecurity field, Cyversity represents a cause that is deeply personal to me. It was inspiring to see so many leaders rally behind this mission, contributing their time, resources, and energy to create a pipeline of opportunities for underrepresented talent in SoFlo!

The chapter’s success is a testament to the collective spirit of this community, a spirit that prioritizes action over words, and collaboration over competition. I’m proud of what we’ve built and confident that the South Florida chapter of Cyversity will continue to thrive and make an impact for years to come.

Lessons in Leadership and Growth

Professionally, leading the global security operations of a company as expansive and dynamic as Carnival Corporation pushed me in ways I never could have imagined. The scale, complexity, and stakes of securing a global cruise line operation required constant innovation, adaptability, and leadership.

But perhaps the greatest lesson came from the people I worked with both inside and outside the organization. South Florida’s cybersecurity leaders demonstrated time and again that leadership isn’t just about making decisions; it’s about building relationships, empowering others, and fostering an environment where ideas can flourish.

I leave this chapter of my career not only as a more seasoned CISO but as a more reflective and empathetic leader, thanks in no small part to the individuals I’ve had the privilege of working alongside.

FIU Veterans Day program

Participating in the FIU Veterans Day program was a truly memorable experience and the perfect professional bookend to my incredible three years in South Florida. It was an honor to join a community that deeply values the service and sacrifice of veterans, reflecting the same spirit of dedication that has defined much of my own journey. Surrounded by fellow veterans, students, and community leaders, the event highlighted the resilience and camaraderie that bind us all. It felt especially meaningful to share my reflections and connect with others in a celebration of service, both past and present, as I prepare for the next chapter of my life and career.

A Heartfelt Thank You

To my South Florida colleagues, peers, and friends: thank you. Thank you for welcoming me into this community, for challenging me to grow, and for showing me the power of collective action. You’ve not only helped me become a better professional but a better person.

Though my role at Carnival Corporation has ended, I take with me the invaluable relationships and experiences that will continue to shape my journey ahead. While I may be stepping away, I’m not stepping out of this community. South Florida will always hold a special place in my heart, and I look forward to staying connected and continuing to support the initiatives we’ve worked so hard to build together.

Here’s to the future of cybersecurity in South Florida…a future I know is bright, thanks to all of you.

With gratitude,

Devon Bryan
